Circuit Court

Newaygo County Circuit Court is a court of general jurisdiction in Michigan. It has the broadest powers among local courts and handles:

  • Criminal cases for felonies
  • Civil lawsuits over $25,000
  • Family cases — divorce, child custody, alimony
  • Appeals from District Court and Probate Court

78th District Court

As of April 2003, the 78th District Court serves two counties — Newaygo and Lake. This court handles:

  • Traffic violations and DUI cases
  • Preliminary hearings in felony cases
  • Small claims — a separate division of the court

The magistrate at the District Court is also authorized to issue arrest and search warrants with the prosecutor's permission.

Newaygo Court Calendar & Upcoming Hearings

To find out the schedule for today, tomorrow, or the current week, use one of the two main resources.

  1. Newaygo County Docket Page — the Docket & Public Case Information page provides the schedule for Circuit Court and Probate Court. The site allows searches by date.
  2. MiCOURT Case Search — a statewide case search system from the Michigan Supreme Court and State Court Administrative Office. Here you can find case information for all state courts, including Newaygo County courts. Note: some courts only display case numbers and criminal conviction data, and state and federal laws restrict public access to certain categories of information.

The data presented in both systems is informational and does not replace the official record kept in the court. If you need the exact date and time of a specific hearing, call the appropriate court office directly.

How to Get a Copy of a Newaygo Court Document

The method for obtaining a court document copy depends on the type of case and whether you need a regular (uncertified) or certified copy.

Online

Through MiCOURT Case Search, you can view basic case information. However, downloading the full text of documents from this system is usually not possible — you need to contact the court office for that.

In Person or by Mail

  • Regular Copy — suitable for review but does not have legal force as an official document.
  • Some records are restricted: juvenile cases, sealed criminal cases, and certain family cases are not subject to public disclosure.

For birth, death, marriage, or divorce records, contact the Newaygo County Vital Records Department or the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Since 2012, birth certificates are issued centrally through the state system.

If you need public records that are not court documents, you can submit a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. The county has the right to charge a fee for preparing copies in accordance with Section 4 of this Act.
